Compare Cat Foods & Cat Food Samples

Why Should You Compare Cat Food Brands?

Although you may think all cat food manufacturers have your cat’s best interests in mind, this is not always the case. Current pet food regulations allow manufacturers to use ingredients that you would never knowingly give to your cat. In fact, you may be shocked to learn what some brands of cat food really contain.

For example: the use of by-products (feet, bones and intestines, etc.), chemical preservatives (BHA and BHT) and grains that are often difficult to digest (corn, wheat, gluten and soy), which are often used as a protein source instead of meat. Over the years pet food has not changed much. We believe your cats should get the best products available so they can live the longest and healthiest life possible.

I suggest that you base your purchasing decision on the quality and effectiveness of the ingredients in the cat food. Compare the cat food you use with other cat foods to determine if it delivers the nutritional value your cat deserves. Do not be swayed by clever marketing and pretty packaging that does not benefit your pet.

Use the chart to the right to find out more about your favorite brand of cat food. Watch the video below to learn what you should look for in pet foods.

Do You Know What is in Your Cat's Food ?

Cat Food Comparisons

Don’t see your brand of cat food?

Here’s how to compare your brand of cat food to Life’s Abundance cat food.

1. Get your bag of cat food. Look for the Ingredient Statement on the label.

2. Read the first 5 ingredients. They play a significant role in the nutritional make-up of a better cat food.

  • What are the protein sources? We believe the primary source should come from quality animal protein, not vegetable protein or grain. Cat foods that list 2 or more grains in the first 5 ingredients may have more vegetable protein than animal protein.

Look for identifiable animal proteins such as "chicken meal" rather generic terms like "poultry meal," which can consist of any fowl (turkey, chicken, geese, etc.). You should be aware that some manufacturers use grains such as wheat gluten or corn gluten as less expensive sources of protein.

Life’s Abundance primary protein is chicken meal. Why? Because chicken meat contains a certain amount of moisture; however, chicken meal is a concentrated source of chicken protein because most of the water has been removed. Therefore, it stands to reason that you get a greater “protein content” in 1 pound of chicken meal versus 1 pound of chicken.

  • What about grains? Two or more grains listed in the first 5 ingredients means your food may have more vegetable protein than animal protein. Grains such as soy, corn, corn gluten and wheat gluten can be difficult to digest, which means less nutrition and more clean up.

Grains like soy, corn, corn gluten, wheat and wheat gluten are generally used as inexpensive sources of protein. Also, these grains are prone to molds, which can be toxic. We will never use these ingredients in Life’s Abundance foods.

Are there by-products? Some manufacturers consider by-products inferior sources of protein and, depending on the source, they can be difficult to digest.

Read the ingredients carefully because current regulations allow some manufacturers to use ingredients that you would never knowingly give to your dog.

Life’s Abundance does NOT contain by-products ingredients.

  • What are the fat sources? Some fats are better than others. We believe the primary fat source in dogfood should be animal based because animal fats contain a profile of fatty acids that are easily metabolized and thus are generally more available to the body.

Animal fats can vary in quality, so look for a species-specific fat like “chicken fat” versus “animal fat” to be certain of the kind of fat your dog is eating.

Life’s Abundance contains chicken fat.

3. Does your food contain other health-promoting ingredients, such as:
A proprietary blend of vitamins and minerals, antioxidant system including vitamins A, C and E, vegetables, fruit, omega fatty acids and direct fed microbials (ingredients similar to those found in supermarket yogurts) to help support healthy immune and digestive systems.

Your dog deserves the very best food. How does your food measure up?
